She received her MSc and PhD from Linköping Institute of Technology (LiTH) Sweden 1987 and 1994. Since 2002 she is a full professor in Biomedical Engineering at Department of Biomedical Engineering, Linköping University, and head of the Neuroengineering Group. She has studied at RWTH Aachen, Germany (1987-1988); been visiting researcher at Yale Medical School, USA (part of 1993); University of New South Wales, Australia (part of 2001); and is a frequent visitor at FHNW Switzerland. She has been acting professor in Biomedical Instrumentation, LiTH (1998-2001), served as department director of research’s studies (1997-2000), deputy department head (2003-2007), member of the LiTH employment board (2003-2014), deputy LiTH Faculty board (2009-present) and member of the Department board (2007-present) and EAMBES council (2015-present). She has more than ten years of experience in working with biomedical industry through NIMED, NovaMedTech and MedTech4Health. She was co-founder of Lisca AB a company marketing laser Doppler perfusion imagers. Her research focus in on biomedical instrumentation, modeling and simulations and implementations in clinical environments as dermatology, cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery. Current research-focus is set on projects within Neuroengineering; deep brain stimulation, neuronavigation and optical techniques in neurosurgery and brain microcirculation. Karin Wårdell is a fellow of EAMBES and IAMBE and a recipient of the Erna Ebeling (2013) and IFMBEs Otto Schmidt Awards (2015).
