The University of Siena, founded in 1240, is an institution rich in history and a great tradition of knowledge, while also being committed to research and innovation. In its eight centuries of existence,
the University of Siena has produced knowledge in every field of study and is today one of the Italian universities achieving top innovative results in research, teaching, and services. The Department of
Medical Biotechnologies (DBM) was established and has been operational since the end of 2012. The DBM participates in or coordinates the activities of 5 undergraduate programs, 4 master’s programs,
2 doctoral schools, and 11 medical and biomedical specialization schools, with a total enrollment of 2,277 students in the 2011/12 academic year. The DBM includes 44 faculty members belonging to 14
scientific-disciplinary sectors and 51 technical and administrative staff units distributed across three locations. The scientific project underlying the DBM focuses on the development of biotechnological
methodologies for medical diagnostics, with research activities characterized by cross-disciplinary projects involving research groups across various fields, including bioengineering.
