May 9th, 2013, Sheffield

The INSIGNEO Institute for in silico medicine is a collaborative initiative between the University of Sheffield and STH NHS Foundation Trust. It is a multi-disciplinary institute involving over 80 academics and clinicians who collaborate to develop computer simulations of the human body and its disease processes that can be used directly in clinical practice to improve diagnosis and treatment. This is probably the most sophisticated application of computing technology in healthcare, and Sheffield has become the UK’s main centre for this work.

On May 9th, INSIGNEO will host an high profile launch event. The main purposes of this event are to:

To introduce INSIGNEO and in silico medicine to the wider community;
To celebrate the excellence of the academic and clinical basis of our work;
To hear from funders how in silico medicine fits into their strategy for the future of engineering, technology and healthcare research;
To hear from policy makers how in silico medicine fits into their agenda for the future of healthcare;
To demonstrate why INSIGNEO is an important part of the strategic agenda of the University and the Trust.
Speakers will describe their strategic vision for research in in silico medicine, the possibilities foreseen for these new technologies to revolutionise healthcare, and how the UK will maintain its position at the leading edge of research in this field.

The audience will include policy-makers: local, national and European; high profile academics; funding bodies; academics and clinicians from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The event is an opportunity to show support for: the University; the Trust and Ground-breaking healthcare initiatives.
