On 12 March, 2012, EAMBES Council met in Brussels, in its new full composition, including the newly elected Councillors. The previous Council meeting was held as a Teleconference in December, and prior to that it met during the 5th European Conference of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) in Budapest, in September.
The General Assembly of EAMBES was held on 13 March, 2012, in Brussels the day after the Council meeting. The meeting was very productive an well attended with 18 representatives of societies and institutions present. Here it is a short report by the Secretary General.
On March 14th the first EAMBES Fellows Symposium took place at the ROYAL FLEMISH ACADEMY FOR SCIENCE AND THE ARTS, BRUSSELS. The Central theme of the symposium was: 'biomedical engineering as a driving motor for development, innovation and success in improving health and healthcare'.
The relationship between EAMBES and IFMBE (International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering) has now been formally established.
The purpose of the consultation is to gain input from stakeholders on the main issues to be addressed in relation to combating chronic diseases in Europe. Their input will then be used to guide the forthcoming reflection paper on chronic diseases which the Council is currently working on and is expected to be published in 2013.
Together with Dr. Thomas Ulmer MEP, EAMBES is organising a Policy Workshop on Biomedical engineering at the European Parliament in Brussels, on 27 March 2012.
Four additional members of the EAMBES Council were recently elected by the EAMBES delegates through a secret ballot and they were officially presented at the General Assembly held on March 13, 2012 in Brussels.
The EAMBES Symposium organized on March, 14th 2012 will see the launch of the EAMBES Division of Fellows and the induction of EAMBES Founding Fellows. During the meeting, organized in connection to the EAMBES General Assembly –March 13th,2012- leaders in the Biomedical Engineering community will present and discuss developments in our field.
The EU legislative framework regulating the placing on the market and the classification of medical devices is expected to be revised shortly.
