On 18 June 2012, the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) held a debate on Horizon 2020 and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
On Monday, May 28th, 2012 the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) General Assembly took place during the 2012 World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering in Beijing.
The European Commission, due to publish its proposals for a revision of the medical devices legislation, is expected to push back the publication to September 2012.
On March 27th 2012 the European Parliamentarian Dr. Thomas Ulmer (EPP, Germany) hosted the Expert Policy Workshop on Biomedical Engineering at the European Parliament in collaboration with EAMBES. On the 02 May 2012, the European Commission launched a consultation on how to best involve stakeholders in decisions related to Health Technology Assessment (HTA). The consultation calls for researchers, companies and other stakeholders to provide input through a questionnaire regarding their needs, interest and capacities to contribute to HTA decisions.

The European Commission has recently published a draft version of the 2013 “Health” Work Programme for the 7th Framework Programme (FP7). This paper lays out the areas of research which will be targeted in the calls due to be published in July of this year. “Biomedical Engineering” is specifically mentioned in the text of the work programme.
On 1st January 2013, Ireland will take over the EU Presidency of the Council of Ministers. While the programme for action of the Irish government will not be published until the end of 2012, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Eamon Gilmore, advanced that Horizon 2020 would be one of the three main priorities of the Irish Government for the Presidency.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on 9 April 2012, launched “Innovation Pathway 2.0”, the aim of which is to provide patients with faster access to medical technologies and to increase collaboration between researchers, manufacturers and the FDA.
