On 21 May 2014 during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City, the Commissioner for the Digital Agenda delivered a noteworthy speech on the subject matter of “Creating a Connected World” during which she spoke about the need for putting ICT at the centre of the Development Agenda.
It is important to note that the Post-2015 Development Agenda is the most far-reaching and comprehensive development related endeavour ever undertaken by the United Nations in its entire history and is one which the European Union has committed itself to deliver upon.
The primary sentiments put forward by Commissioner Kroes revolved around the need for Europe make optimal use of the digital tools at our disposal, including mobile devices and networks and big data processing, which the Commissioner described as two of the “strongest enablers of economic opportunity”. Although mHealth is not explicitly mentioned, the referencing of mobile devices in general by the Commissioner is beneficial in that it could potentially lend support to EAMBES aim of addressing the obstacles in the deployment of mHealth solutions.
