European Research Council Publishes Work Programme for 2015

The European Research Council (ERC) Work Programme for 2015 has been published on 23 July 2014. The ERC which is funded under Horizon 2020 has the unique idea of not having any particular topics as set criteria for funding and instead relies solely on the “excellence in science” principle to provide long-term funding for high-risk/ground breaking scientific pursuits.

The “Life-Sciences” section in Annex I (page 52) should be of particular interest to EAMBES members:

  • Molecular and Structural Biology and Biochemistry -Molecular synthesis, modification and interaction, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, metabolism, signal transduction.
  • Genetics, Genomics, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology - Molecular and population genetics, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, biological modeling and simulation, systems biology, genetic epidemiology.
  • Cellular and Developmental Biology -Cell biology, cell physiology, signal transduction, organogenesis, developmental genetics, pattern formation in plants and animals, stem cell biology.
  • Physiology, Pathophysiology and Endocrinology - Organ physiology, pathophysiology, endocrinology, metabolism, ageing, tumorigenesis, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome.
  • Neurosciences and Neural Disorders -Neurobiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neurochemistry, neuropharmacology, neuroimaging, systems neuroscience, neurological and psychiatric disorders.
  • Immunity and Infection -The immune system and related disorders, infectious agents and diseases, prevention and treatment of infection.
  • Diagnostic Tools, Therapies and Public Health -Aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of disease, public health, epidemiology, pharmacology, clinical medicine, regenerative medicine, medical ethics.
  • Evolutionary, Population and Environmental Biology - Evolution, ecology, animal behaviour, population biology, biodiversity, biogeography, marine biology, eco-toxicology, microbial ecology.
  • Applied Life Sciences and Non-Medical Biotechnology -Applied plant and animal sciences, food sciences, forestry, industrial, environmental and non-medical biotechnologies, bioengineering, synthetic and chemical biology, biomimetics, bioremediation.

ERC Grants can last up to 5 years and unlike most Horizon 2020 grants, can cover 100% of all costs.
The full 2015 Work Programme as well as timelines for submission etc can be found here.
