On the 15 July 2014 Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker was elected as the President of the European Commission (EC) for the next legislative term. Mr. Juncker was elected following a 47-minute speech before a secret ballot, with 422 votes in favour (376 needed), 250 votes against, 47 abstentions and 10 void ballots.

On the 30 June 2014, the new Italian Presidency published a document setting out the Council’s work programme as established by the future trio of Presidencies (Italy, Latvia and Luxembourg), covering the period July 2014 to December 2015.
Following the publication on 21 March 2014 of the Regulation 282/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the “Establishment of a third Programme for the Union's action in the field of health (2014-2020) “, on 11 April 2014 the European Commission, Directorate General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) hosted an the Information Day on the 3rd European Health Programme.

The 8th celebration of The European Patients’ Rights Day 2014 was held from May 12-14th 2014 in Brussels. The event was entitled “The role of citizens’ organisations in the empowerment of patients with chronic diseases” and was organised by Active Citizenship Network (ACN) with the support of the Public Health Programme European Economic and Social Committee.
