On 04 July 2014, the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union published a document addressed to the Working Party on Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices in relation to the Council’s modifications to the Proposal for a Medical Devices Regulation. The document specifically deals with chapter VI on Clinical Evaluation and Clinical Investigations under the MDR and the in-vitro Medical Devices Regulation.

The urgent need for biomedical engineers in the UK National Health Executive (NHS), the world’s largest healthcare system was highlighted by a new report entitled: Biomedical Engineering: Advancing UK healthcare. The report was published by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers UK on the 25 July 2014.
IMI 2 will hold an Open Info Day on its IMI 2-Call 1 in Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday 30 September 2014. In a similar vein to the Webinars held in July, the day will encompass an overview of IMI 2’s funding and intellectual property (IP) rules, funding advice so as to facilitate ease of applying under IMI 2, and workshops and presentations of the IMI 2-Call 1 Call topics by the project coordinator. Additionally, there will be plenty of networking opportunities and IMI staff will be on hand to answer questions relating to the new Call topics and the IMI 2 application procedures. It is important to note that additional information about the IMI 2-Call 1 will be communicated after approval by the IMI Governing Board (July/August 2014).
The Innovative Medicines Imitative 2 (IMI) has announced that it will hold a total of three webinars from the 11-15 July 2014 so as to better acquaint those wishing to apply for the IMI 2–Call 1 for proposals with the application process and the subject matters of the recently announce initial calls . EAMBES have responded to the mHealth consultation which was launched by the European Commission on the 10 April 2014 and which could serve to promote the value Biomedical Engineering (BME).
The European Research Council (ERC) Work Programme for 2015 has been published on 23 July 2014. The ERC which is funded under Horizon 2020 has the unique idea of not having any particular topics as set criteria for funding and instead relies solely on the “excellence in science” principle to provide long-term funding for high-risk/ground breaking scientific pursuits.
On the 15 July 2014 Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker was elected as the President of the European Commission (EC) for the next legislative term. Mr. Juncker was elected following a 47-minute speech before a secret ballot, with 422 votes in favour (376 needed), 250 votes against, 47 abstentions and 10 void ballots.
